Jewelry and Metalsmithing

Course Description

Jewelry and Metalsmithing students will learn the techniques and terminology of a professional
craftsman, as well as the characteristics of light metals. Students will use original designs to
make sculptures, jewelry, and creative non-functional pieces. Basic techniques, such as sawing,
soldering, buffing, drawing wire, forging, casting, stone setting, etc., will be included. Students
contracting for Level 1 must maintain a minimum of a “B” and complete a research project. The
lab fee for this course is $10.00 (subject to change). Silver and stones are not included in the lab
fee as they are optional.


Prerequisites- “C” or better in Art Foundations I

Jewelry and Metalsmithing- Advanced

Course Description

Advanced Jewelry and Metalsmithing will emphasize exploring more advanced and more
complicated techniques of design, forging, casting, stone setting, precious metal clay, and peg
setting. Students contracting for Level 1 must maintain a minimum of a “B” and complete a
research project. The lab fee for this course is $10.00 (subject to change). Silver, stones, and
PMC are not included in the lab fee as they are optional.

Prerequisites- “B” or better in Jewelry and Metalsmithing

Glass Techniques

Course Description

This course introduces the student to a variety of techniques and terminology used by stained
glass professionals. Included are glass painting, warm glass/glass fusing, Tiffany foil method,
glass etching, and box making. The lab fee is $10.00 (subject to change). Students will pay for
lead free solder.
Prerequisites- None

Glass Techniques- Advanced

Course Description

Advanced students may choose to make large windows, lampshades, large fused glass pieces or
other three-dimensional projects. Advanced students will pay for their supplies on an individual
basis.
Prerequisites- “C” or better in Glass Techniques

Design- Three Dimensional

Course Description

This course will include three-dimensional problems in a variety of media including paper, wire,
clay, plaster, etc. Students will be required to work in low relief and full round design in
functional and non-functional assignments. The course will include an in-depth unit on pottery
skills, focusing on hand building techniques of coil, slab, additive and subtractive sculpture.
Glazing and kiln loading and firing will also be taught. The lab fee is $8.00 (subject to change).

Design- Three Dimensional- Advanced

Course Description

Students will be encouraged to focus on a media of choice, and to attempt more challenging
assignments in order to gain a higher level of expertise. Advanced clay techniques of carving,
coil, slab, and wheel may also be explored. Other media may also be emphasized. A weekly
journal is required. Lab fee is $8.00 (subject to change).
Prerequisites- “C” or better in Three Dimensional Design

Enameling on Copper

Course Description

The student is taught the art of melting colored powdered glass onto a copper base. Simple
jewelry, enameled pictures, dishes, etc., are made. The techniques of under glaze, limoges, and
cloisonné are studied and applied. The lab fee for this course is $7.00 (subject to change). Silver
and pewter are optional and are not included in the lab fee.

Enameling on Copper- Advanced

Course Description

Students taking this course will be working with limoges, cloisonné and other advanced and
experimental techniques. The projects can be set in glass, wood, or pewter. Lab fee is $7.00
(subject to change). Silver and pewter are not included in the lab fee.
