Art Foundations I and II

Course Description

Art Foundations I

Art Foundations is designed to give students a background in the fundamentals of fine art in
preparation for advanced art courses. The general objectives for this program encompass four
priorities:
1. Application of Elements and Principles of Design
2. Artistic Terminology (and Vocabulary)
3. Materials and Techniques
4. Aesthetic Appreciation

Art Foundations I is a prerequisite for the following art courses: Art Foundations II,
Drawing, Commercial Art and Design, Art Photography, and Jewelry and Metalsmithing.


Prerequisites- None
Semester
Open to Grades 9-12
1/2 Credit

Art Foundations II

More challenging application of design principles, as well as an overview of Art History, will be
taught in order to provide students with a greater understanding of the visual arts. A variety of
media will be used in solving both two and three-dimensional problems. A full credit in Art
Foundations (I & II) is a prerequisite for Drawing and is strongly recommended for
students considering advanced art course participation.

Drawing and Advanced

Course Description

Drawing

Many types of drawing are explored-from technical drawing through expressive drawing.
Materials used include pencil, ink, charcoal, conte, and pastels. Students will complete projects
demonstrating an awareness and mastery of each of the following types of drawing: contour line
drawing, texture value studies, portrait drawing, still life or landscape studies. Students will learn
to correctly reproduce what they see in the media provided. This course is a prerequisite for the
Painting course and is strongly recommended for students preparing art portfolios. The lab fee is
$8.00 (subject to change).


Prerequisites- “C” or better in Art Foundations I and II

Open to Grades 10-12

Drawing- Advanced

Advanced Drawing may be taken with permission of the instructor. Students taking this course
will be encouraged to explore a more creative approach to drawing, interpreting what they see in
personal ways, combining media, or attempting more challenging themes. Students contracting
to take this course at Level 1 must meet additional requirements including daily journal writing
and a long-term research project. The lab fee is $8.00 (subject to change).

Painting and Advanced

Course Description

Painting

Students will complete projects using a variety of painting techniques including pastels, acrylics,
tempera, watercolor, and mixed media. Correct use of materials such as brushes and palette
knives will be taught, as well as technical skills and color theory as it applies to each media. The
lab fee is $8.00 (subject to change).


Prerequisites- “C” or better in Drawing
Semester
Open to Grades 10-12
1/2 Credit

Painting- Advanced

Advanced Painting may be taken with permission of the instructor. Students will be encouraged
to focus on a painting media of choice, and to attempt more challenging assignments in order to
gain a higher level of expertise. Students contracting to take this course at Level 1 must meet
additional requirements including daily journal writing and a long-term research project, such as
observing and interviewing a local painter. Historical painting movements are studied and
incorporated into some course assignments. The lab fee is $8.00 (subject to change).
