Introduction The Yorkshire Terrier is a very energetic breed of dog in the toy group. They do well while living in apartments because they are very small. Their adverage weight is seven pounds and they can be around 6-7 inches tall. The Yorkie needs daily exercise which many of them get while indoors. Because they are so small, they can easily be stepped on if the owner is not looking out for them.

If available, this dog will enjoy playing outdoors, at the park, or in a backyard. Yorkshire Terriers are very sensitive to the cold becuase they lack the fur that most dogs have. Warm weather is preferable to this dog but avoid keeping them in extreme hot conditions because they will become tired quickly or dehydrated due to their size.

HistoryThis breed of dog, the Yorkshire Terrier, originated in the United Kingdom. It is a small breed within the Terrier group. It has an adverage weight of about seven lbs but there are smaller breeds such as the Teacup Yorkie. They can also weight more than seven lbs. Yorkies have small black eyes and V-shaped erect ears. They have a tiny black nose as well as black nails and paw pads. The nails of a Yorkie need to be clipped every few months to keep them from becoming too long. The dog could cause injury to itself or slide on the floor if the nails are not clipped.

This Terrier used to be a hunting dog and hunt with handlers and other dogs. Because of its independant nature they were able to go out and find their own prey. This behavior can still be seen in the Yorkie's of today. They can be very clingy at times and love to be around their owner but they aso need their privacy. They are a very energetic breed but will need their rest too. They make perfect lap dogs and love to feel secure and safe with their owner.

AppearenceThe Yorkshire Terrier has fine long steel-blue and black coat with light brown hair around its head. The colors in their hair can range from light tan to darker brown and black. Each dog is different. They also have a medium length docked tail.

Their hair is usually grown out and well groomed for show dogs while the normal house dog's hair is kept short. Keeping the hair long takes a lot of maintenance. It will need to be groomed for a couple hours a day to avoid tangels. This dog does not have fur which makes them hypoallergenic. This is a good thing for people who are allergic to dog fur and makes this breed a good choice for them. There is also no dog hair around the house to clean up or brush off your clothes.

TempermentThe Terrier group have strong personalities so the Yorkie, amoung this type, does too. Often they feel as if they are a large dog but are just trapped in a small dogs body. Every Yorkshire Terrier is different. Some will bark at strangers who come to the house while others will be friendly and outgoing. Most Yorkie's are independent, smart, and very brave for their size.

Many Yorkie's in a multi-dog household will act as the "alpha-dog." They do not know of their small size and enjoy playing with larger dogs.

Yorkie's are very intelligent. They can memorize many words and be able to understand multiple commands. They are able to recognize certain toy names, who's house their owner is going to, and even when it is time for them to eat. It is not difficult to train a Yorkie. With only a few repetition's, the Yorkie will be able to pick up a command.

HealthThere are many health problems that a Yorkshire Terrier owner must look for. They range from genetic disorders, to reverse sneezing, and bacterial infections. Some of the most common health issues is Luxated Patellae. This is when the knee caps in the hind legs shift out of place. Sometimes this can occur when the Yorkie jumps off high landings, runs into something such as a road curb and hits their knee, or from walking on uneven ground. The severity can range from Grade 1 to Grade 4.

Another common health problem to look for is Hemorrhagic Gastric Enteritis or HGE. Small breeds of dogs can easily become dehydrated from diarrhea because they have little weight to loose. Yorkshire Terriers can also develop dry eye, heart defects, collapsing trachea, Cushings Syndrome, cataracts, bladder stones, allergies, and even pancreatitis.
